Ephesians has been settling into the depths of my soul lately. Here’s how I know: I’ve never been more convinced of the kindness of God.
If you’ve been around church for a while, you’ve surely heard that “God’s kindness is what leads us to repentance.” I know that phrase was spoken to and around me countless times, but I didn’t really get it. We — churches, Christians — seem to generally live in confusion about this, I think. We tell ourselves, and those around us, that God’s kindness is what draws us to change, to see the world rightly. And then, we whirl right around and preach behavior modification, infused with shame language. I found myself wondering, often:
If God’s kindness is what moves the needle, why do I always feel less than loved?
